In a dramatic courtroom moment, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Susan Bryant-Deason held up a phone book-sized docket documenting the 20-year legal battle between the Jogani brothers, underscoring the immense work undertaken by the father-son legal duo from Friedman² LLP. The case, which culminated in a staggering $10 billion verdict, revolved around claims that Shashikant Jogani’s real estate empire was stolen by his brother, Haresh Jogani.

Judge Bryant-Deason, emphasizing the enormity of the legal work, granted Shashikant Jogani $7 million in attorney fees for the Friedman team, who represented him for the past decade. The judge dismissed the defense's argument that the fees were "extravagant" and insufficiently documented, noting the extensive filings and the intense labor required to navigate the case.

"This case was a colossal endeavor," Judge Bryant-Deason stated, showcasing the massive docket as a testament to the legal effort. "The work involved was immense, and I have no hesitation in granting these fees."

The case, which began in 2003, saw Shashikant Jogani (known as Shashi) initially sue Haresh and his other three brothers, accusing them of freezing him out of their lucrative real estate partnership. The litigation spanned two decades, involving numerous appeals, a jury verdict that was overturned, and shifting family loyalties. The recent trial ended with a $3 billion punitive damages award against Haresh Jogani, adding to the case's estimated total value of $10 billion, making it one of Los Angeles’ largest verdicts.

Despite Haresh Jogani's legal team, led by Steven Bledsoe of Larson LLP, arguing that the Friedmans’ $1,800 hourly rate was inflated and undocumented, the judge stood by her decision. She cited the extraordinary nature of the case and the intense demands placed on the legal teams involved.

"The fees are justified," Judge Bryant-Deason concluded, acknowledging the blood, sweat, and tears poured into the case by all parties. "This case has been nothing short of breathtaking in its scope and complexity."

Shashikant Jogani’s legal representation includes Steven R. Friedman and Michael Friedman of Friedman LLP. The other Jogani brothers and their respective legal teams remain entangled in the case as it continues to unfold.
