Julio César Chávez Jr.’s summer went from boxing marquee to legal crucible in weeks. After dropping a unanimous decision to Jake Paul on June 28 in Anaheim, the former WBC middleweight champion was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on July 2 for overstaying a visa and allegedly lying on a green-card application. In mid-August, he was deported to Mexico—where authorities immediately arrested him on organized-crime and arms-trafficking allegations—and transferred him to a federal lockup in Hermosillo, Sonora.

From Studio City Arrest to Sonora Custody

ICE’s July 2 detention came just four days after the Paul fight. U.S. officials said Chávez Jr. entered on a B-2 tourist visa in 2023 that later expired; he is also accused of material misrepresentation related to a green-card filing. “ICE detained [him] and is processing him for expedited removal,” DHS said at the time.  U.S. Department of Homeland Security

On August 19, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum publicly confirmed the deportation, telling reporters, “I understand he was deported… they told us he will come to Mexico.” He was turned over at Nogales and moved to a federal facility in Hermosillo.

What Mexico Alleges

Mexico’s National Arrest Registry and statements from officials indicate Chávez Jr., 39, faces accusations tied to organized crime and trafficking of firearms, ammunition, and explosives. Prosecutors say the investigation began in 2019, and a warrant was issued in 2023—well before his return. He is alleged to have ties to the Sinaloa Cartel, which the United States designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization earlier this year. Chávez Jr.’s camp has pushed back, disputing any cartel affiliation and emphasizing he’ll contest the allegations in court. Why He May Never Re-enter the United States

The immigration implications are severe:

• Material Misrepresentation (INA §212(a)(6)(C)(i)): If a person willfully misrepresents a material fact to obtain an immigration benefit, they are inadmissible for life—a “lifetime bar.” Limited waivers exist but are discretionary and hard to secure, especially where public-safety concerns are alleged. USCIS
• Unlawful Presence & Post-Removal Bars (INA §212(a)(9)): Accruing a year or more of unlawful presence triggers a 10-year bar, and removal itself creates separate inadmissibility periods. Some bars can be overcome only with advance consent to reapply (Form I-212) or a §212(d)(3) nonimmigrant waiver—again, discretionary.

Bottom line: Between an alleged fraud ground (a lifetime bar) and post-removal ineligibilities, Chávez Jr. is, as a practical matter, barred from re-entering the U.S. indefinitely, absent rare, case-by-case waivers. USCIS+1

The Boxing Backstory the Court Can’t Ignore

Chávez Jr., son of a Mexican icon, reached the sport’s summit with a WBC middleweight title in 2011 but has had a turbulent run since. He was routed by Canelo Álvarez in 2017 and notoriously quit on the stool versus Daniel Jacobs in 2019—both episodes that signaled a career slide. His loss to Paul revived scrutiny of his conditioning but also set the stage for the immigration arrest that followed.

Geopolitics Lurking in the Background

This case is also unfolding as the U.S. hardens policy against transnational cartels. In February 2025, the State Department designated several groups—including the Sinaloa Cartel—as FTOs, elevating legal and enforcement consequences. What Comes Next

Expect initial proceedings in Sonora’s federal system while Mexican authorities test the breadth of the 2019–2023 probe. If the case proceeds to trial, cooperation with U.S. agencies could become pivotal, especially given cross-border arms-trafficking allegations. Meanwhile, in the U.S., his immigration consequence is immediate: removal completed, bars attached, and reentry blocked unless a future administration—and multiple adjudicators—grant rare relief.
