A Cleveland-area school community has been pulled into a renewed storm of controversy following the release of a Netflix documentary, triggering administrative action against a longtime teacher and reigniting public debate around one of Ohio’s most closely watched criminal cases involving teen driver Mackenzie Shirilla.

The situation escalated quickly after the documentary aired, drawing attention not only to the fatal 2022 crash that killed two young men, but also to the family members speaking publicly in its aftermath. Now, a father’s on-camera remarks have led to professional consequences and a wave of scrutiny aimed at a private school already trying to shield its students from outside pressure.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE ANNOUNCED AFTER DOCUMENTARY RELEASE

The father of Mackenzie Shirilla has been placed on administrative leave following the release of the Netflix documentary The Crash.

Steve Shirilla, an art and digital media teacher at Mary Queen of Peace School in Cleveland, was removed from his position after comments he made about his daughter appeared in the film, according to reporting from 19 News and WKYC.

The school, which serves students from Pre-K through eighth grade, informed parents via email that a staff member had been placed on administrative leave following allegations described as “poor judgment.”

The email emphasized the school’s priorities in a carefully worded statement:

"We want every parent and family to know that the safety, wellbeing, and trust of our students remain among our highest priorities,"

The message continued with reassurance about how the institution responds to concerns:

"We take all student concerns seriously and are committed to responding promptly and responsibly whenever concerns are brought forward."

Mary Queen of Peace School did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

INSIDE THE DOCUMENTARY THAT SPARKED THE CONTROVERSY

The Netflix documentary The Crash, released Friday, May 15, revisits the tragic July 31, 2022 incident in Strongsville, Ohio, that left two young men dead and a community searching for answers.

On that day, Mackenzie Shirilla, who was 17 at the time, drove her car into a brick wall at nearly 100 miles per hour. Her boyfriend, 20-year-old Dominic Russo, and their friend, 19-year-old Davion Flanagan, both died at the scene.

What initially appeared to be a horrific accident soon turned into a criminal investigation with far more serious implications.

Authorities later began to suspect that the crash was not accidental but intentional, alleging that Shirilla deliberately accelerated the vehicle before impact.

FROM INVESTIGATION TO LIFE SENTENCE

As investigators reviewed evidence, the case shifted dramatically in tone and direction. In November 2022, Mackenzie Shirilla was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and aggravated vehicular assault, along with several additional charges.

The legal proceedings culminated in August 2023 when she was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years. She ultimately received two concurrent life terms.

Despite the sentencing, her legal team continued to challenge the outcome, filing two appeals, one in September 2023 and another in April 2025. Both appeals were denied, leaving the original conviction in place.

The case remains one of the most widely discussed teen driving prosecutions in recent Ohio history, amplified further by the documentary’s release and renewed media attention.

FATHER’S ON-CAMERA COMMENTS SPARK BACKLASH

In The Crash, Steve Shirilla appears speaking about his daughter’s behavior and personal choices, including her use of cannabis, while also maintaining his belief in her innocence.

"I don't have a problem with her smoking dope,"

he said.

"If you're going to smoke a drug, that's the one I believe you should take."

His comments immediately drew public reaction, particularly given the severity of the underlying case and the deaths involved.

He also appeared alongside his wife, Natalie Shirilla, in segments addressing broader allegations made during Mackenzie’s school years, including claims from other students that she bullied peers. One allegation referenced in the documentary suggested she told a classmate to end their life, while school records cited disciplinary action related to bullying.

The inclusion of these claims added further complexity to an already emotionally charged case narrative, blending courtroom outcomes, school records, and personal testimony into a single controversial portrait.

SCRUTINY OVER DOCUMENTARY PRESENTATION

Beyond his statements, Steve Shirilla also faced criticism for his appearance in the documentary. He wore a shirt with the word “BOOM” printed on it during filming, which some viewers interpreted as insensitive given the nature of the crash and the loss of life involved.

The visual detail quickly circulated online, becoming part of broader criticism surrounding the tone and framing of certain documentary moments.

Steve later confirmed to 19 News that he had been placed on leave from his teaching position while the school conducts an investigation. He also expressed frustration with how he was portrayed in the final cut of the documentary, while maintaining his belief that his daughter is innocent.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY REACTS TO PUBLIC ATTENTION

As the controversy spread, parents connected to Mary Queen of Peace School expressed concern about the attention being directed toward the institution and its staff.

One parent defended both the school and Steve Shirilla’s role as an educator, emphasizing that his professional record should be separated from events that occurred years after his hiring.

"No amount of background checks on Mr. Shirilla will show something that his daughter will do two years after he is hired,"

the parent said.

They also pushed back against online criticism and threats directed toward the school community:

"As a parent of a student who attends there, it is not fair for our school, staff, children or families to receive hate and threats because of third-hand actions... There is no reason to be threatening an elementary school."

The comment highlights a growing tension between public reaction to true crime media and the impact such attention can have on unrelated school communities caught in the aftermath.

A CASE THAT CONTINUES TO DIVIDE OPINION

Even years after the crash, the case of Mackenzie Shirilla continues to generate strong and divided reactions. Supporters of the conviction point to the severity of the crash, the evidence presented at trial, and the final sentencing. Others continue to question aspects of the investigation and sentencing, a debate reignited each time new media coverage emerges.

The Netflix documentary has intensified that divide, pulling family members, educators, and school communities into renewed public scrutiny.

What remains clear is that the consequences of a single moment on an Ohio roadway in 2022 continue to ripple outward, affecting not only those directly involved, but also those connected to them through work, school, and community ties.

As the school investigation continues, attention now turns to how institutions balance employee conduct, public perception, and the safety and trust of the communities they serve.
