CHIPS Act

Enacted in 2022, the CHIPS and Science Act serves as a catalyst for encouraging homegrown innovation and production in the semiconductor realm.

This funding comes in the wake of Samsung's commitment to inject a staggering $44 billion in investment into Texas, with plans to nurture a thriving semiconductor ecosystem within the state.

Announcement of the grant underscores the need for a strategic agenda to invigorate domestic semiconductor research and manufacturing. The funds will steer the nation away from dependence on overseas suppliers, particularly in China. The allocated funds are earmarked for propelling Samsung's ambitious plans in Taylor, Texas, where the company is poised to establish a cutting-edge campus. 

The Taylor facility will serve as a nucleus for groundbreaking research and development in advanced logic technologies, manufacturing processes, and packaging methodologies. 

Samsung also intends to channel a portion of the grant towards expanding operations in Malta, New York to erect a state-of-the-art fabrication facility. The Malta facility will cater to diverse industries including automotive, aerospace, defense, and artificial intelligence.

Samsung's windfall echoes Intel's recent triumph in securing the largest CHIPS grant to date, amounting to a staggering $8.5 billion. With a multifaceted approach, Intel is set to inaugurate new semiconductor plants in Arizona and Ohio while modernizing existing facilities in New Mexico and Oregon. This ambitious initiative is expected to infuse the US economy with an estimated 30,000 jobs, marking a significant milestone in bolstering domestic technological prowess.

The CHIPS and Science Act has empowered the federal government to extend funding and loans to tech enterprises, fostering a conducive environment for domestic innovation and expansion. 

GlobalFoundries received a grant of $1.5 billion earlier this year, coupled with a $1.6 billion loan to fortify its capacity for expansion and technological innovation.
