Cybersecurity Threat: Texas Hospitals Forced to Turn Away Ambulances

Cybersecurity Threat
The East Texas healthcare system is just the latest hospital group that has been forced to turn ambulances away because of an apparent cybersecurity breach. Similar attacks this year forced hospitals in Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, and Pennsylvania to turn away incoming ambulances. It has not been disclosed whether federal authorities are actively investigating the cybersecurity threat to the Texas hospital system. In 2023, there have been 209 publicly reported ransomware attacks on U.S. healthcare organizations. This is an increase 162 attacks in 2022, according to Allan Liska, a ransomware expert at cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. The Department of Health and Human Services, US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the FBI have yet to provide official statements or comments on the ongoing situation. The absence of information from federal authorities raises questions about the coordination between healthcare organizations and government agencies.Healthcare Providers
Healthcare providers, often lacking robust cybersecurity resources, struggle to defend themselves against evolving cyber threats. Disruptions in a hospital network will often shut down critical services, leaving doctors unable to access patient information and safely treat patients.
