Sweeping Federal Bribery Charges Filed
The indictment reveals allegations of bribes that included “cash, gold, payments toward a home mortgage, compensation for a low-or-no-show job, a luxury vehicle, and other valuable assets.”
During a press conference, Damian Williams, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, emphasized that Senator Menendez’s official Senate responsibilities explicitly prohibited certain actions, such as influencing agencies in favor of individuals or entangling himself in criminal matters.
Williams also revealed that investigators found over $480,000 in cash, some stuffed in envelopes and hidden in clothing, as well as $70,000 in Nadine Menendez’s safe deposit box.
The indictment alleges that Menendez surreptitiously engaged in such actions on behalf of those who were bribing him and his wife.
The charges have come with a wave of calls for Senator Menendez’s resignation from prominent Democrats, including congressional colleagues and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. Although Senator Menendez did step down from his position as Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman, he vehemently asserted that he had no intentions of resigning.
Two-tier justice system?
