The arrest of Italian journalist Celia Sala in Iran and the detention of Swiss-Iranian national Mohammad Abedini at Milan’s Malpensa airport have drawn significant attention. Despite denials from Iranian authorities, these incidents appear to be connected cases with broader implications.
Sala, who was held in the infamous Evin prison in northern Tehran, was initially detained without specific charges. Iranian authorities later stated that she had violated Iranian laws but provided no details.
After her release on Wednesday, she returned to Italy. Meanwhile, Abedini, charged by the United States with allegations related to lethal drone warfare, remains in Italian custody.

Iran’s Denial of Connections
Iran has categorically denied any link between the two cases.
Esmail Baghaei, spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, stated at a press conference in Tehran: “These two issues have nothing to do with one another. The Italian journalist was arrested for violating Iranian laws.”
