California’s Criminal and Financial Reforms

Let’s start with the Golden State, where lawmakers have introduced tighter gun-control restrictions, including mandatory informational booklets on the “dangers and justifications of gun ownership.” The law also allows the state to consider hate-motivated threats when issuing gun violence restraining orders. Meanwhile, criminals caught in widespread smash-and-grab robberies face tougher penalties.

On the financial front, California-regulated banks are prohibited from charging fees for immediate withdrawal denials. SB-1075 caps overdraft fees at $14 for credit union accounts, and SB-1144 mandates that online marketplaces (like Facebook Marketplace or eBay) begin gathering data on large third-party sellers—data that law enforcement can tap into to crack down on organized retail theft, starting this July.

“We want to empower small businesses while safeguarding consumers,” says Laura Griffin, a policy analyst at the California Department of Financial Protection. “This legislation will increase transparency without stifling commerce.”

Colorado’s Gun Storage and Cage-Free Eggs
