In a move as swift as it was unexpected, the barbecue chain Smokey Bones shuttered all of its locations nationwide on April 28, sending shockwaves through employees and loyal customers alike. The sweeping shutdown came without warning, unfolding like a lights-out moment across dozens of cities in a single day.

Parent company FAT Brands Inc. confirmed the closures, stating, “As of yesterday [April 28, 2026], all Smokey Bones locations have ceased operations. On behalf of Management, it has been a privilege to serve our customers.”

Employees and Communities Caught Off Guard

From Mentor, Ohio to Warwick, Rhode Island, the closures played out with striking uniformity — locked doors, unanswered phones, and stunned staff. Workers in Colonie, New York and Lansing, Michigan reported learning of the shutdowns the very morning they took effect.

Multiple locations in Pennsylvania also went dark, while restaurants in Columbus, Ohio and Springfield, Illinois joined the nationwide closure. In Warwick, a sign posted on the door confirmed the abrupt end: the restaurant had “permanently closed its doors” as of April 28.

The suddenness left employees scrambling for answers, with many discovering the fate of their workplaces in real time — a collapse that unfolded like dominoes falling simultaneously across state lines.

Bankruptcy Filing Foreshadowed Collapse

The closures come just months after smokey bones files for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 protection. According to filings dated January 26, 2026, FAT Brands reported assets and liabilities both ranging between $1 billion and $10 billion, signaling immense financial strain beneath the surface.

Chapter 11 typically allows companies to continue operating while restructuring debt. But in this case, the safety net appears to have unraveled, transforming what is often a slow financial reset into a sudden full-stop.

Parent Company Strategy Falls Short

Twin Hospitality Group Inc., the entity overseeing Smokey Bones operations, also filed for Chapter 11 on the same date. At the time, the company projected confidence, stating it would use the process to reduce debt, maximize stakeholder value, and maintain normal operations.

“Throughout the Chapter 11 process, Twin Hospitality expects the brands will remain open and operating as usual,” the company said in a prior statement — a promise that now stands in stark contrast to the chain’s abrupt disappearance.

Earlier Warning Signs Emerged

The collapse did not come entirely without warning. In September 2025, Twin Hospitality acknowledged operational inefficiencies and began trimming underperforming locations, closing 15 restaurants while attempting to bolster stronger ones. Leadership changes followed, including the appointment of a new president to oversee the remaining 26 locations.

Yet those efforts ultimately proved insufficient. What began as targeted restructuring has now culminated in a complete shutdown, marking a dramatic end for a once-prominent casual dining brand.
