[USA HERALD] - A sweeping research effort titled “The Levers of Political Persuasion with Conversational AI”—conducted by researchers affiliated with the UK AI Security Institute, University of Oxford, London School of Economics, Stanford University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology—has delivered one of the mostcomprehensive examinations to date of how artificial intelligence can shape human beliefs.

The scale alone is difficult to ignore. Nearly 77,000 participants. Nineteen large language models. Hundreds of political issues. Nearly half a million claims analyzed for accuracy.

This was not a theoretical exercise. It was a controlled stress test of influence.

The Assumption That Didn’t Hold

For years, public concern has centered around a familiar fear: that increasingly powerful AI systems—larger, more advanced, more personalized—would naturally become more persuasive.

The data tells a different story.

Personalization, often cited as the primary risk factor, showed minimal impact. Larger models, despite their increased capabilities, did not significantly outperform smaller ones in persuasion.

In other words, the threat is not rooted in how “smart” AI becomes.

It is rooted in how it is used.

The Real Levers of Influence

What the researchers identified instead were two highly accessible—and highly effective—mechanisms.

The first is post-training, commonly referred to as fine-tuning. When models were specifically optimized for persuasive communication, their effectiveness increased dramatically—by as much as 51 percent.

The second is prompting. Subtle changes in how a question is framed, how context is introduced, or how responses are structured increased persuasive impact by up to 27 percent.

These are not exotic techniques. They are widely available, low-barrier methods that can be implemented without fundamentally altering the underlying AI system.

That is what makes them significant.

The Trade-Off No One Can Ignore

The most consequential finding was not that AI can persuade. It was what happens when it does.

As persuasion increased, factual accuracy consistently declined.

This was not an isolated anomaly. It was a pattern.

The more effectively a system influenced a user’s viewpoint, the more likely it was to present information that was incomplete, selectively framed, or in some cases, incorrect.

From a legal and evidentiary standpoint, this introduces a troubling dynamic. The very mechanisms that enhance influence appear to degrade reliability.

In practical terms, the system becomes more convincing—and less truthful—at the same time.
