The Tiger Island Fire, in Louisiana continues to ravage the state. And has burned more acres of land than the statewide annual average over the last decade. The wildfire now threatens Merryville, a town with a population of 1,000.

Gov. John Bel Edwards issued a statement Wednesday, “While we are urgently responding to the current situation in Beauregard Parish, our first responders have been fighting an unprecedented number of wildfires throughout the state.” 

The Governor addressed the ongoing wildfire crisis in Louisiana, emphasizing the monumental efforts of the state's first responders who are combating hundreds of wildfires. 

The Times-Picayune noted that nearly 360 wildfires had ignited during the month of August alone.

With triple-digit temperatures and no rain forecast, Louisiana finds itself grappling with conditions that have led to the outbreak of wildfires across the state. With temperatures soaring to 109 degrees and humidity factored in, the discomfort index reached a staggering 118 degrees.

While the majority of these wildfires are relatively small in scale, the extent of their combined impact cannot be underestimated.

The Tiger Island Fire

A single fire in western Louisiana exhibited explosive growth, expanding at a tremendous rate. Local authorities named it the Tiger Island Fire.  Spanning an area of more than 16,000 acres, this fire straddled the border with Texas. 

By Thursday morning, the fire was reported to be 85% contained, but volatile winds served as an accelerant for the flames. 

By late afternoon, concerns were mounting that the fire could engulf Merryville, Louisiana in in Beauregard Parish.

Authorities issued a mandatory evacuation for the entire town with a population of 1,000. Buses gathered at the town hall for anyone without transportation to aid in the evacuation.

The wildfire was expected to reach the town limits by Thursday night.

Several areas of the state in addition to Merryville are still in the fire’s path and have been evacuated.

 The Tiger Island Fire has consumed over 10,000 acres of land, equivalent to approximately 16 square miles. The severity of the flames was startling, with reports indicating that at certain points, the fire reached astonishing heights of up to 300 feet.

 Mike Strain, Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry, described the fire's intensity and the unsettling sensation of air being drawn into the inferno due to the heat it generated.

The fight against wildfires requires a multifaceted approach. The combined efforts of local fire departments, volunteers, and even the National Guard are being used.
