The New York judge overseeing former President Donald Trump's hush money case announced on Friday that he will not issue a sentencing decision before Election Day. The sentencing hearing has been rescheduled from September 18 to November 26, allowing more time for legal proceedings.
Trump Hush Money Sentencing Delayed : Judge Merchan Delays Sentencing
Justice Juan M. Merchan granted Trump’s request to delay sentencing in his case involving payments to Stormy Daniels, a porn star, ahead of the 2016 election. The former president was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to these payments.
Originally set to rule on September 16 regarding Trump's motion to overturn his conviction, Justice Merchan cited the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that grants presidents broad immunity for official acts. This ruling, expected on November 12, will influence the final sentencing decision, which Justice Merchan stated would occur two weeks later if necessary.
Prosecutors Support Delay
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office informed Justice Merchan in an August 19 letter that prosecutors do not oppose the delay. They highlighted logistical challenges that could arise if Trump’s dismissal bid is denied and he chooses to appeal the conviction.
Proceeding with the September 18 sentencing would have left Trump with limited time to appeal the decision before being sentenced. The prosecutors emphasized that a condensed schedule might lead to inefficiencies and increased security concerns at the courthouse.

The Supreme Court's recent decision to provide presidents with broad immunity for official acts plays a crucial role in Trump's legal strategy. Justice Merchan’s decision to delay sentencing allows the court to consider this ruling before finalizing Trump's punishment.
