Freedom Of Press

Ever since Gutenberg invented the printing press in the 1400s, the written word in forms of books and tablets has been available for the literate masses to read.  But the real influence of publishing was limited to those wealthy enough to own a printing press.  Historically, the wealthy have had the ability to distribute content in forms agreeable to them to the masses.  The Federalist Papers are a terrific example of the ability to affect public opinion through the written word.    This ability enabled elites with the ability to dramatically affect and influence society on various issues of the day as well as in elections and even buying patterns.

Corporate empires emerged early in America like the NY Times  and Hearst Companies, where billionaire influencers were able to buy ink by the barrels and paper by the forest to capture eye balls and influence public opinion.

From direct movements like the founding of a nation and the Federalist Papers to more subtle ones that led to women’s suffrage and Prohibition, elitists with access to printed presses have found unimaginable opportunities by making printed words available for readers.

Newspapers were initially founded on political principal and were clear advocates for causes.   That changed in the early 20th century where journalists were better trained and taught to be objective storytellers of the news.  Sure, opinion columns and editorial preview existed, but news was perhaps at it purest and most unbiased form for years.  Newspapers and then television personalities gained notoriety and fame and were regarded for being truthful synthesizers of the goings on of the day.  Opinion creeped back in to mainstream journalism through the 1970’s and 1980’s and by the time George H.W. Bush famously took on the liberal Dan Rather on evening news, the country was ripe for a change.  Cable news soon took off and then the Internet changed everything else.

Today, there seems to be not a single well-regarded source of news that is not derided by one side or the other for bias.  Fake news has also become the rage, although it is difficult to distinguish between fact, bias, opinion and fiction in today’s news world.   If one reads or watches multiple accounts of the same event, one can leave with multiple views of what actually happened, depending upon the spinners and the newstellers of the event.   No wonder American’s don’t trust the news media, Congress or anything else anymore!

What has been constant through Gutenberg to the Internet is that elites still control the microphone or at least the volume of it.  New platforms like Google, Twitter, Facebook, Medium, Blogs…etc.  all made it possible to get your news published, but authors were still left with limited tools for real exposure even with all of these “new media” tools.   The people’s voice was still, essentially, rendered moot.

Today, USA Herald is proud to announce that it has created technology that will empower you, the reader, to launch stories and draw larger audiences to them than a piece on CNN.   And the best part about it is that it is free to use.

Here’s how it works:

All of our readers, whether you are an individual with an important story or a company looking to get news around your product, can now create a story and release it for free on USA Herald.

Once you submit your story, you have the option to start driving real people to your story by setting a budget, which can be as low as $20.   We target FB and Instagram, properly disclosing who you are in the byline and showcasing to readers on FB that it is you behind the story.

So, with a few clicks, you can get your story live to the world.  Here’s an example of what a story looks like that we ran this year that received thousands of hits and went viral: https://usaherald.com/wrongfully-imprisoned-29-years-leo-schofield-story/.

Now you can do the same.   It’s a very easy process, simply sign up for free here and submit your article.    Before submitting, make sure you note the following:

  • We do not allow “fake” news to be published on our site.  Be prepared to substantiate your claims before should we ask for proof.
  • Make sure that your content is edited and well written.  We reserve the right to reject any content that is poorly written.
  • Do not submit any hate speech or anything that is intended to inflame people.

If you have any questions please email us at [email protected].
