A recent Fox News report affirms the existence of upcoming alterations for West Virginia based food stamp beneficiaries.
An Overview of Mandates for Food Stamp Beneficiaries
On Tuesday, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice signed a bill into law which will impact state members who receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The aforementioned bill furthermore mandates that certain recipients will have to meet particular work requirements in order to continue benefiting from SNAP.
The following changes will occur in October 2018. Firstly, adults between the ages of 18-49 will have to work for at least 20 hours each week. Volunteering, workforce training, or traditional work fall under the acceptable categories of work for this bill. However, SNAP beneficiaries who are veterans, pregnant, disabled, or otherwise responsible for dependents are excluded from the foregoing requirements.
What Do Americans Think of the Newest SNAP Bill?
The overall consensus of West Virginia's preceding bill is quite varied. Many Americans also have a variety of notions and perceptions of food stamps and SNAP recipients. Those in favor of the bill have expressed beliefs that work requirements will halt abuse of the program. However, individuals who disapprove of the aforesaid bill believe that it will adversely impact poor Americans.
Over the past few years, many people in this country have expressed concerns about welfare in general. Some Americans believe that recipients of SNAP and other programs view the program as a free ride and an escape from work. Likeminded citizens have furthermore stated that living off another person's dime is not just nor realistic.
Nevertheless, not everyone in the United States shares the aforementioned viewpoints. Other Americans have expressed concerns about mandates for welfare beneficiaries. These individuals have moreover opined that work requirements like West Virginia's serve as unfair penalizations for poor people in this country.
