ChatGPT, the popular chatbot developed by OpenAI, has experienced a decline in its user base for the first time. The AI app was called the "fastest-growing consumer application in history." And now it is experiencing a steady drop in users.

 Data from Similarweb, a leading data firm, revealed that ChatGPT's mobile and desktop traffic worldwide decreased by nearly 10 percent between May and June. Additionally, Sensor Tower reported a steady decline in downloads of ChatGPT's iPhone app since its peak in early June.

 ChatGPT had set a record for attracting the fastest-growing user base in history. But it’s worth noting that technology adoption rates have been accelerating. All the technology companies continue to invest heavily in AI product development and chatbot technology.

Whether a 10 percent decline in ChatGPT users over a single summer month should raise concerns remains uncertain.

To demonstrate the impact of user adoption rates, Meta, formerly known as Facebook, recently launched Threads, a rival platform to Twitter.

 Within a remarkably short span of time, Threads surpassed ChatGPT's record as the fastest-growing consumer app. While ChatGPT reached 100 million users in just two months, Threads amassed an astonishing 70 million users in under two days. Its success was bolstered by instant sign-ups from another Meta-owned platform, Instagram.

The surge in Threads' numbers came from something other than flashy new AI features. Twitter is threatening to sue Threads for intellectual property rights violations. And says it is a copycat app.

Experts Speculate about the Drop in users

The Washington Post highlighted several potential reasons behind ChatGPT's user drop-off. This decline in usage could potentially indicate a waning interest in chatbots. 

One possibility is that the quality of the chatbot may have dipped as its popularity increased operational costs, leading OpenAI to implement adjustments to reduce expenses.

 Another factor to consider is that fewer students may require the assistance of chatbots during the summer months when academic demands are typically lower.

It is also important to note that ChatGPT has faced its fair share of user-related issues. 

This includes a recent lawsuit. And an increasing number of companies advising employees against using tools like ChatGPT due to privacy concerns. Even Apple has joined the list. 

OpenAI has also responded to user backlash and regulatory pressure by implementing measures to censor harmful ChatGPT responses. These actions may have contributed to some users perceiving the tool as less useful, less trustworthy, or simply less enjoyable, leading to a number of users abandoning the tool.
