The leadership crisis within the Florida Democratic Party (FDP) continues its president and chief administrator Sally Boynton Brown resigns.

On Monday, Boynton Brown told FDP leaders that she is resigning from her position after a “prayerful consideration.” Her resignation is “effective immediately.”

In an e-mail to party leaders, Boynton Brown wrote, “I can’t begin to tell you what a pure pleasure it was to work with you. The people of the Democratic Party are our greatest asset and I hope you never forget the power you have to make real change happen every day with your actions.”

In addition, Boynton Brown stressed that the party’s staff “has been put through so much.” She implored FDP leaders to follow her lead and “put then above all else as you move forward.”

Boynton Brown defended FDP Chairman Bittel

On Friday, FDP Chairman Stephen Bittel decided to step down from his position due to . Six women accused him of creating a demeaning and unprofessional workplace environment.

On Saturday, Boyton Brown wrote a in which she defended Bittel. According to her, “It is unfortunate that not everyone who has worked with Chairman Bittel has had the same experience I have.”

She said in her experience the FDP chairman “has been refreshingly open to feedback” regarding his conversational style. Bittel “modified his approach when he learned that others found it off-putting.”

Additionally, Boynton Brown stated that Bittel treated her as a “full-partner and transferred real power” to her immediately upon hiring.

“His complete confidence and willingness to empower others is what has allowed us to make such great strides here in Florida in his short tenure. I will greatly miss his leadership and selfless dedication to our Party,” she said.

Furthermore, Boynton Brown said, “I am heartbroken to think that members of our staff may have not felt comfortable coming to me to share their truths.”  She noted that they’ve been working to change the culture of FDP to ensure that it is transparent and inclusive.

She recommended internal policies to address bullying, sexual harassment, and other inappropriate behaviors within the party.

FDP vice chair not interested to become permanent chairman

The Florida Democratic Party appointed its Vice Chairman Judy Mount as interim chairman following the Bittel’s resignation. According to her, she is not interested to become the permanent chairman of the party.

In a statement, Mount said she will continue to support the party, its candidates, and causes important to Democrats. However, “not as the next elected Chair.”  She will support the next chairman of the party.
