Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp has fulfilled his promise to put his $1 million settlement from the Amber Heard defamation case to good use. 

The actor, famous for his role in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, will split the payment among five charitable organizations.

Depp chose to donate to the Make-A-Film Foundation, The Painted Turtle, Red Feather, Tetiaroa Society, and Amazonia Fund Alliance, with each organization receiving $200,000, according to sources.

The legal battle between Depp and Heard unfolded last year. Depp sued his ex-wife for the 2018 Washington Post op-ed in which she disclosed being a survivor of domestic abuse. 

Although Depp was not explicitly mentioned, the actor sued for defamation. And claimed that the allegations had severely damaged his career and cost him substantial financial losses. 

After six weeks of court proceedings, a Virginia jury unanimously ruled in favor of Depp, awarding him $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. However, the total settlement was reduced to $10.35 million due to state legal limitations.

Heard was also awarded damages in her countersuit, receiving $2 million as compensation.

 Despite the prolonged legal battles, the former couple let go of their appeals and opted for a settlement in December.

In an Instagram announcement, Heard expressed her determination to defend her truth, emphasizing that the settlement was not an admission of guilt or a concession. 

She said the settlement was “not an act of concession” and that she had “made no admission.”

“The vilification I have faced on social media is an amplified version of the ways in which women are re-victimized when they come forward,” she added. “Now I finally have an opportunity to emancipate myself from something I attempted to leave over six years ago and on terms I can agree to.”

The agreed-upon settlement of $1 million, covered by Heard's insurance company, was met with a promise from Depp and his legal team to donate the funds to deserving charities.

 Depp's lawyers, Benjamin Chew and Camille Vasquez expressed their satisfaction with the resolution. In a statement, they agreed that their client's priority was to bring the truth to light throughout the legal process. The closure of this painful chapter allows Depp to move forward while helping those in need.

Johnny Depp's philanthropic donations will support various causes, including filmmaking programs for children facing severe medical conditions, environmental conservation efforts, and aid for indigenous communities.
