The Political Fault Lines

The strike does not exist in a political vacuum. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat facing re-election later this year, finds herself navigating a minefield in which every path carries a cost.

In a Saturday morning statement, Hochul warned that meeting the unions' demands could "raise fares as much as 8%, pit workers against one another and risk tax hikes for Long Islanders." She called on both sides to return to the bargaining table immediately and negotiate "non-stop until a deal is reached."

"I stand with the LIRR riders and will fight to preserve the long-term stability of the MTA," Hochul said — a statement calibrated to signal solidarity with commuters while stopping well short of backing either the agency or the unions outright.

The political calculus is not subtle. William Dwyer, a labor relations expert at Rutgers University — whose state endured its own commuter rail strike last year — put it plainly: "She's up for re-election, and Long Island is a critical vote for her. So if there's a significant fare hike, that does not bode well for her on election day."

Riders Caught in the Crossfire

Gerard Bringmann, chair of the LIRR Commuter Council, the system's primary rider advocacy group, expressed sympathy for workers while making clear where he believed the financial burden would ultimately land. "If the unions get the pay increases they are looking for, it will come at the expense of our riders who will see next year's 4% fare increase doubled to 8%," he said. "Like the union workers, we too are burdened by the increase in the cost of living here on Long Island."

The MTA has activated a contingency plan offering free limited bus service on weekdays to New York City subway stations — a stopgap the agency itself acknowledges was never designed to handle the full volume of a normal LIRR workday. The agency is also urging commuters who can to work remotely and avoid nonessential travel.

The Last Time This Happened

The last Long Island Rail Road strike lasted two days — in 1994, a time before smartphones, remote work, and the kind of economic interdependence that makes a transit shutdown in 2025 a categorically different crisis than it was three decades ago. The unions were legally permitted to strike beginning at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, and they exercised that right with precision.

Gil Lang, general chair of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen's LIRR general committee, addressed riders directly: "To every LIRR passenger whose trip is disrupted, know that the MTA left us no choice but to strike."

Whether that message lands as an explanation or an excuse may ultimately depend on how long the trains stay still — and how much patience 250,000 daily commuters have left.
