The decision by Netflix to reach an agreement with Prince's estate raises its own set of legal and ethical questions. What was exchanged? What rights did the estate leverage? And crucially — what did the public lose when a documentary made in the public interest was effectively purchased into silence?

THE ACCUSER — JILL JONES

Jill Jones is not a stranger to Prince's story. She worked alongside him, lending her voice to his 1982 masterpiece 1999 and remaining in his orbit for years. She has described their relationship with the kind of complicated honesty that resists easy categorization. "He was loveable, adorable, but he could be hateful too," she told the Mirror this week. That is a portrait of a human being — flawed, brilliant, contradictory — and it is a perfectly legitimate thing to say about someone you knew intimately.

But Jones goes further. She claims that in 1984, during a hotel visit, a confrontation broke out between them. She became jealous after she says Prince kissed her friend, and she slapped him. She then alleges that Prince responded by punching her repeatedly in the face. She says she wanted to press criminal charges. She says she was warned not to — told by members of Prince's camp that doing so would ruin his career and destroy the income stream that so many people depended on. Going to the hospital, she says, was deemed too risky in case the story leaked.

Later that same year, the Purple Rain tour launched — one of the most commercially successful tours in rock history. Jones says that had she come forward, it would not have happened. The two, she says, eventually reconciled. Prince allegedly sent her balloons, toys, and candy as what she describes as an apology. "It was really hard for us to not be around each other," she says. "He always thought I would be there."

Let's take each party in turn — because the legal implications here are anything but simple, and they deserve to be treated with the seriousness they demand.

Starting with Netflix: when a media company enters into an agreement with an estate to suppress a documentary that may contain newsworthy allegations of criminal conduct, it walks a very fine line. The First Amendment broadly protects the press. But voluntary contractual agreements that restrict publication are a different matter entirely — you can sign away rights you legally hold. The question is what Netflix agreed to, what consideration was exchanged, and whether any such agreement creates ongoing legal exposure.
