This agreement signals a significant step towards rejuvenating Hollywood which has been virtually paralyzed due to strikes by the actors and writers unions.

SAG-AFTRA ending Strike

The strike began when tens of thousands of actors took to the picket lines on July 14, following the failure of SAG-AFTRA to secure a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), a trade group that represents studios and streaming services. AMPTP includes Comcast, the parent company of NBC News.

SAG-AFTRA confirmed that the tentative agreement was unanimously approved by the SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Committee, officially putting an end to the 118-day strike at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday. The next step involves the agreement being presented to the union's national board on Friday for a comprehensive review and consideration. Further details regarding the agreement will be disclosed following this crucial meeting.

The negotiations during this strike included the involvement of key industry figures. Among them were Disney's Bob Iger, Netflix's Ted Sarandos, Warner Bros. Discovery's David Zaslav, and NBCUniversal's Donna Langley. These leaders joined the talks in an effort to resolve the impasse, reflecting the significance of reaching a resolution for both sides.

Writers Guild of America Parallel Strike 

The Writers Guild of America, a union representing screenwriters in Hollywood, also engaged in negotiations and achieved their own agreement with the studios in September. This agreement, a new three-year contract known as a "minimum basic agreement," officially ended the writers' strike on September 27.

 The demands of both unions shared commonalities, such as enhanced protections against the use of artificial intelligence, increased base compensation, and a larger share of streaming revenues. Remarkably, this marked the first instance of both unions striking simultaneously since 1960.

Economic Impacts

The dual strikes significantly disrupted Hollywood, causing production halts for numerous projects, including major movie sequels, network series, and streaming originals. As a result of guild rules preventing actors from promoting their work during the strike, major studios postponed the release of completed films, including "Dune: Part Two."
