The Official Explanation — and Its Problems

The Ministry of Defence, and independently the British Astronomical Association, settled on a verdict: Venus. The planet was unusually bright in the pre-dawn sky that October, and astronomer Howard Miles of the BAA appeared on BBC Plymouth to explain that a very bright object near the horizon can create powerful optical illusions — apparent motion, a sense of proximity, a feeling of being followed.

In Parliament on November 8, 1967, Under-Secretary of State for Defence Merlyn Rees told the House that while "the source of a few lights has not been positively identified," he was confident that "none of these unidentified lights was an alien object." The Conservative MP for Devon, Peter Mills, remained notably unconvinced: he pointed out that two trained police officers had tracked the object for over an hour.

The Venus hypothesis has a certain elegance. The planet was indeed brilliant and low on the horizon that autumn. Optical illusions are real and well-documented. And yet the explanation crumbles against several hard facts that neither the MoD nor the BAA ever fully addressed.

⬡ Why Venus Doesn't Fully Fit

→Speed and motion: Venus does not visibly accelerate away from a moving car at 90 mph, then slow to let the car keep pace, then accelerate again. Apparent motion of a fixed astronomical body does not behave interactively.

→A second object: At 4:23 a.m., a second cross-shaped object appeared and joined the first. There is only one Venus.

→Ground-level corroboration: Multiple independent witnesses with no contact with each other — police officers, BBC engineers, a motorist — described the same cross shape at treetop height, not on the horizon.

→Nationwide wave: The same cross-shaped object was reported by different police forces on different nights across the length of England. Venus was in the same position in the sky for all observers — the object's described behavior was not.

A Wave Nobody Talked About

The Devon incident is remembered. What is less remembered is that it was the centerpiece of a nationwide UFO wave — a concentrated cluster of sightings that, in October 1967 alone, overwhelmed British military and civilian authorities.
