The Money Is Locked Up Until Adulthood

Trump Accounts are designed for long-term investing, not emergency savings. Families generally cannot withdraw money before January 1 of the year the child turns 18.

Once the child reaches adulthood, the account will usually convert into a traditional individual retirement account. Withdrawals will then follow IRA rules, which may include taxes and a 10 percent penalty for some early distributions.

Certain exceptions may apply, including qualified higher-education expenses or up to $10,000 toward the purchase of a first home. Even so, parents should understand that this is not a checking account, ordinary savings account, or unrestricted college fund.

The restrictions may help the money grow over time, but they also make the funds unavailable for medical bills, housing emergencies, or other immediate needs during childhood.

Millions of Children Have Already Been Enrolled

The IRS said taxpayers had requested Trump Accounts for more than 4 million children as of March 31. More than 1 million of those children were covered by elections claiming the $1,000 pilot contribution.

The gap between those figures reflects the difference between general account eligibility and eligibility for the federal deposit. An older child may qualify for an account without meeting the four-year birth-date requirement for the Treasury contribution.

Treasury began sending activation emails in May to families that had already submitted the required form. The department also launched a dedicated app to help users activate and manage the accounts.

Treasury Warns Families About Scams

The program’s rollout has already created an opening for fraud. Treasury warned that it will not contact families by phone or text during the initial activation period.

Officials advised parents to use the official app or type the government website directly into a browser. Scammers may imitate the program, send fake activation links, request Social Security numbers, or demand payment to release the benefit.

Families should be suspicious of any message claiming they must pay a fee to receive the $1,000 deposit. They should also avoid submitting personal information through links sent by unknown numbers, social-media accounts, or unofficial email addresses.
