The State Chose Specific Religious Translations

The debate is not only about whether students should read the Bible. It is also about which version of the Bible the state selected.

The list relies on several translations, including the King James Version, the English Standard Version, and the New International Reader’s Version. Critics note that those translations developed within Protestant Christianity or remain especially popular among evangelical Christians.

The list includes one passage from a Jewish translation of the Tanakh, Lamentations 3. However, Jewish leaders have argued that labeling the overall approach “Judeo-Christian” does not make it religiously balanced.

Catholic-approved Bible translations do not appear on the list. Neither do sacred writings from Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, or other major religious traditions.

That imbalance has led critics to question whether Texas is teaching the Bible as literature or using literature classes to advance a particular religious outlook.

Supporters Say Biblical Literacy Is Essential

Supporters of the reading list argue that removing biblical references from education leaves students unable to understand major works of literature and key moments in American history.

The Bible has influenced novels, poetry, speeches, political arguments, music, and art for centuries. Phrases such as “David and Goliath,” “the writing on the wall,” “the Good Samaritan,” and “a house divided” appear throughout public life, often without explanation.

Board supporters say students should recognize those references even if they do not share the beliefs behind them.

They also argue that the broader reading list contains hundreds of secular works and that the biblical passages represent only a small portion of the required curriculum.

From that perspective, teaching scripture in an English classroom is no different from studying Greek mythology, Roman epics, or other foundational texts that shaped later literature.

Critics See a Christian Preference, Not Comparative Study

Opponents are not arguing that schools must pretend the Bible has no literary or historical importance. Their concern is that Texas selected one religious tradition for mandatory study without offering meaningful comparison with others.

Thousands of Texas students come from Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Jewish, and nonreligious families. Critics say the state is requiring those students to study Christian scripture while giving little or no space to the sacred texts and literary traditions of their own communities.

Religious scholars have also questioned the way some passages are paired with other works.

The required list links Lamentations 3, a chapter centered on suffering, punishment, and hope in God, with works about the Holocaust. Critics warn that the pairing could imply a theological explanation for the murder of European Jews if teachers do not handle the material with extreme care.

Others argue that the chosen translations may present Christian interpretations of texts that Jewish readers understand differently.

The concern is not merely that a Bible appears in the classroom. It is that the government selected the passages, chose the translations, assigned the grade levels, and made the readings compulsory.
