The CEO's Promise, Tested

The timing of the increase creates an uncomfortable contrast with the public commitments made by Verizon CEO Dan Schulman during the company's January earnings call. Schulman pledged at the time to end the practice of rolling out "price increases without corresponding value" and to build a "customer-obsessed culture" within the organization. The Unlimited Ultimate price hike, announced roughly four months later, is the first significant test of that pledge — and its reception in the marketplace will say a great deal about whether Schulman's words have translated into operational reality or remain aspirational language.

The Competitive Pressure Cooker

Verizon's pricing decision arrives in a market that is being reshaped by competitive forces the company cannot ignore. T-Mobile has been relentlessly aggressive in pursuing subscriber growth. AT&T has been methodically expanding its fiber and wireless bundle offerings. Cable providers and smaller carriers — including mobile virtual network operators, known as MVNOs — have been undercutting the major carriers on price with increasing effectiveness.

"The industry is seeing more competitive pressure, and the thirst for subscriber adds at T-Mobile and Verizon is leading the charge," said Raymond James analyst Frank Louthan in a January report. The paradox is acute: in a market where competitors are lowering prices and doubling down on value, Verizon is raising them.

The consumer data makes the risk concrete. A December survey from WhistleOut found that 42% of customers across Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile reported seeing their phone bills increase over the previous year. More strikingly, 58% of those customers said they are actively considering switching to a different carrier. Analysts estimate the three major carriers combined could lose as many as 30 million customers due to elevated wireless plan pricing — a figure that concentrates the mind considerably.

Recent data from CTIA, the wireless industry's trade association, confirms the broader trend: more carriers are cutting prices and emphasizing value as the primary lever for customer acquisition and retention.

What Comes Next

For Verizon, the Unlimited Ultimate price increase is a calculated bet that the addition of Identity Secure and Verizon Family Plus provides sufficient perceived value to justify the higher entry price for new customers — and that the protection of existing subscribers from the increase will limit the churn damage.

Whether that bet pays off or accelerates the customer losses that have already defined the past three years may become clear in the company's second-quarter earnings report. In a wireless market where consumers have demonstrated, repeatedly, that they are willing to switch — and where the tools to do so have never been easier to access — a $5 increase is not just a pricing decision. It is a statement about what Verizon believes its customers will accept.

The market will render its verdict one port-out at a time.
