Locals say they have been looted and robbed at gunpoint while deadly wildfires rage on the island. Maui residents are begging for a bigger response from local authorities, and question when FEMA will show up.

Devastating Wildfire Engulfs Hawaiian Island of Maui: Death Toll Rises – USA Herald

Hawaii officials urge tourists not to travel to Maui. Hotels currently are only prepared to house evacuees and first responders.

There has been an alarming surge in crime throughout the region.

Rescue efforts are underway to provide essential supplies and aid to the affected residents. Most people have lost everything and are fighting for survival.

The island's already struggling residents are facing the terrifying reality of widespread looting and robberies. The devastating fires have not only ravaged the landscape but have also exposed the vulnerability of the community. And on every level they are sending an urgent cry for help.

In the wake of the fire's theft, looting, and even armed robberies are becoming commonplace. This has left Maui residents reeling from shock and frustration. Many blame the inadequate supply distribution and lack of information for the rampant crime wave.

Jeremy Aganos, the owner of the surviving restaurant Coconut Caboose, vividly described the scene as "utter chaos," with people desperately searching for food, water, and shelter.

The chaotic circumstances left many people without food, water, or shelter. And has prompted some residents to take uncharacteristic action, and others emphasize that some acts of theft are borne out of desperation.

Barrett Procell, who lost his home to the fires, offers a sympathetic perspective. He argues that those resorting to looting are driven by pure survival instincts.

The escalation of crime has also led to sharper criticism of local leadership. And many are accusing them of inaction.

Searching for the dead

The deadly wildfires have already claimed nearly 100 lives, marking it as the deadliest catastrophe in the US in over a century. Sadly, the death count is expected to be much higher. And estimates are that the death count could eventually climb to over 1,000.

A mobile refrigerated morgue was rushed to Lahaina on Monday. Officials are trying to keep the bodies cool so they can begin the identification process.

Maui Police Chief John Pelletier said that the fire damage has been so massive that each recovered body needs to be identified through DNA testing.

So far only about 3% of Lahaina, where most of the bodies were found, has been searched. — At the time of the fires there were 13,000 residents. And with everything burned to the ground, it’s not possible to know how many people made it out safely.

In an update from Maui County, they warn although most of the fires have been somewhat contained two fires are still burning. This includes the one that reduced Lahaina’s neighborhoods to piles of ash and debris.

At least 10,000 acres have been burned.

Deadly Wildfires result in Chaos

Matt Robb, co-owner of the Dirty Monkey bar, called attention to the dire circumstances and questioned the capability of authorities to handle the crisis effectively. And points out the lack of Federal responders.

The chaos has prompted a grassroots effort within the community, with locals organizing patrols and distributing supplies since they feel abandoned by official relief efforts.

The absence of a coordinated response from government officials has left residents feeling helpless and isolated.

Kami Irwin, a Maui resident assisting in relief coordination, voiced the community's frustration at the lack of direction, noting that residents are left without a plan of action as they grapple with the aftermath of the wildfires.

As the devastation continues, Maui residents have stepped up to care for each other in the absence of effective leadership.

Despite the sharing of videos depicting the true extent of the devastation, locals believe that the situation on the ground is far worse than what the news reports. The disconnect between the official response and the ground reality has only intensified the community's struggle.

Amidst the chaos, Hawaii State Senator Angus McKelvey underscores the need for immediate aid and housing for those who have been displaced and injured by the fires.

He criticizes the lack of a coordinated government response, highlighting the absence of FEMA assistance and emphasizing the challenge of obtaining essentials like money and identification.

The surge in crime and growing desperation amidst the chaos paints a harrowing picture. While the community rallies together to support one another, the call for effective leadership and immediate aid remains urgent, as the residents of Maui grapple with the challenges posed by the catastrophic wildfires.
