Chinese Citizen Journalist

This week marks the end of a four-year ordeal for Chinese citizen journalist Zhang Zhan who is set to be released from prison. She became well-known for her coverage of the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The news is eagerly awaited by supporters and human rights activists. But there is some doubt if the government will really release her. And her status is unknown at the current time.

Chinese Citizen Journalist

She is best known as an independent journalist in China's tightly controlled media landscape.

Zhan, a former lawyer hailing from Shanghai, garnered international attention when she ventured to Wuhan in February 2020. This is where she began reporting on the unfolding crisis as Covid-19 gripped the city and the nation.

She garnered worldwide attention reporting information surrounding the outbreak. This angered the Chinese Communist Party who maintained strict control over the narrative.

Her arrest in May 2020 under the vague charges of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble" was widely condemned as a means to suppress dissenting voices. Subsequently, she was sentenced to a four-year prison term by a Shanghai court.

Throughout her incarceration, concerns mounted over Zhang's health as she resorted to hunger strikes to protest against her conviction and mistreatment. Reports emerged indicating her deteriorating condition, with supporters fearing for her life.

Repressive Regime

While anticipation surrounds Zhang's impending release, uncertainties loom over the conditions she may face post-incarceration. Activists have expressed apprehension that she could be subjected to surveillance and other restrictions, hindering her access to necessary medical treatment and impeding her freedom of movement.

Amnesty International has called for Zhang's release to mark a new chapter in her struggle for justice and human rights. The organization emphasized the need for China to respect the rights of defendants and prisoners in accordance with the law.

China has more than 109 journalists currently jailed. The repressive nation is also the world’s biggest jailer of media professionals.

Zhang's case is an example of a broader crackdown on freedom of expression in China. They are especially trying to silence journalists and activists who challenge the government's narrative.

Despite global condemnation and calls for transparency China refuses to allow any criticism. In 2021 Zhang documented the harsh realities faced by Wuhan residents during the lockdown, providing a glimpse into the human toll of the crisis.

Reporters Without Borders, an advocacy group, highlighted China's dismal press freedom record, ranking it 172nd out of 180 countries and territories in its World Press Freedom Index. The organization awarded Zhang its 2021 Prize for Courage.

Despite lacking formal journalistic training, Zhang's courage and empathy propelled her to amplify the voices of the marginalized and disenfranchised. In her videos and social media posts, she captured the struggles of those grappling with economic hardships and mourning the loss of loved ones to Covid-19.
