Seeds of the Tech War

The roots of this tech war can be traced back to 2015, when China unveiled its ambitious "Made in China 2025" plan. This blueprint aimed to propel the nation to the forefront of global innovation and establish it as the undisputed leader in high-tech manufacturing.

 This strategic move served as a wake-up call for US policymakers, who were already wary of China's assertive foreign policy. Experts like Enrique Feás of Elcano Royal Institute highlighted the potential for technological dominance to translate into military superiority, further fueling anxieties in Washington.

Sanctions and Trade Wars

The Obama administration initiated the tech war's early skirmishes with investigations into Chinese telecom giant ZTE for allegedly violating sanctions and illegally exporting US technology to sanctioned nations. However, the conflict truly intensified under the Trump administration. 

In 2017, ZTE was hit with a hefty fine, followed by increased scrutiny on Huawei amid concerns about espionage. China's National Intelligence Law, passed that same year, further stoked these anxieties by requiring domestic and foreign subsidiaries of Chinese companies to hand over data to the government upon request.

These concerns culminated in Huawei's addition to the Entity List, effectively severing its access to US technology and barring it from participating in America's 5G network rollout. This move was mirrored by bans on other Chinese companies like ZTE. 

The tech war transcended the realm of telecom as President Trump imposed hefty tariffs on $60 billion worth of Chinese goods, including solar panels, aiming to challenge China's stronghold in this pivotal green technology sector.

The Semiconductor Battleground

Semiconductors, the brains behind modern technology, lie at the heart of the tech war. Recognizing their vital role, the Trump administration implemented export controls on foreign chipmakers using American equipment. This move was designed to restrict China's access to essential resources needed to develop its own high-end semiconductors. These actions were further bolstered in 2020 with the addition of China's leading chipmaker, SMIC, to the Entity List, citing its ties to the Chinese Communist Party.

Made in China 2025 

China's "Made in China 2025" plan placed significant emphasis on domestic chip production, aiming to achieve an ambitious goal of 80% self-sufficiency by 2030. 

However, these aspirations were challenged by US restrictions on crucial equipment, particularly extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines – the crown jewel of chipmaking technology. These machines are solely manufactured by the Netherlands-based ASML, which is currently barred from exporting them to China.

This leaves Chinese manufacturers relying on older deep ultraviolet (DUV) machines. While still capable of producing advanced chips, they are not on par with their EUV counterparts. 

Despite these limitations, China has showcased progress with SMIC releasing a 7-nanometer chip in 2023, and Huawei reportedly developing a groundbreaking 3-nanometer chip. If successful, this would put them at the forefront of chip technology.

The US Advantage

While the US has ceded ground to industry leaders like Taiwan and South Korea in terms of chip production, it retains its crown as the global leader in chip design and innovation. 

American chipmakers, unlike their Chinese counterparts, have unrestricted access to cutting-edge lithography equipment. Industry giants like Intel are reportedly on track to launch a revolutionary 1-nanometer chip as early as 2027.

However, China's recent $47.5 billion injection into its semiconductor industry highlights its unwavering commitment to self-sufficiency. Some experts even suggest that US actions are inadvertently pushing China towards accelerated innovation and domestic chip production. China also holds a dominant position in critical mineral resources, which are essential for chip production.

It was during the Trump administration that the battle with China for tech supremacy took off.

Electric Vehicle Race: China Takes the Lead

A decade ago, the US dominated the electric vehicle (EV) landscape. Tesla, the American pioneer of highway-capable EVs, enjoyed a significant market share advantage over Chinese competitors.

Today, the narrative has shifted dramatically. The US now plays catch-up, capturing a mere 10% of global EV sales in 2023.

China's dominance in the EV market can be attributed to several factors. The Chinese government's early and significant investment in EV research and development laid the groundwork for future success. Generous subsidies for both manufacturers and consumers, coupled with the availability of low-cost raw materials like steel, made Chinese EVs highly affordable. This strategy has fueled a surge in exports, with sales reaching a staggering $34.1 billion in 2023.

However, China's EV leadership is not without its challenges. The nation's charging infrastructure lags behind, with only one charger for every eight EVs compared to America's ratio of one charger per 21 EVs.

This disparity creates a barrier to widespread EV adoption, a factor the Chinese government is actively addressing through significant investments in expanding the charging network.

The Future of Tech Supremacy

The outcome of the US-China war for tech supremacy remains uncertain. While the US retains an edge in innovation and chip design, China's rapid advancements in chip production and its dominant position in the EV market are impressive. The future likely lies in a scenario of co-dependence, with both nations excelling in different areas. 

This fierce competition, however, carries significant benefits. It pushes both countries to accelerate innovation, ultimately leading to faster development of groundbreaking technologies that will benefit the world at large. And the war
