Three Critical Points Readers Should Know

  • A federal jury convicted nine alleged members of a North Texas Antifa cell for a coordinated armed assault on an ICE detention facility.
  • Prosecutors presented extensive evidence including encrypted communications, firearms acquisitions, and tactical planning.
  • The case marks what federal authorities describe as the first major indictment targeting a coordinated Antifa militant network.

By Samuel A. Lopez | USA Herald - A federal jury in Fort Worth, Texas has delivered sweeping convictions against nine individuals accused of orchestrating a violent assault on the Prairieland ICE Detention Center, a federal immigration facility located in Alvarado.

After a 12-day trial that included testimony from more than 45 witnesses and over 210 pieces of evidence, jurors convicted the defendants on a range of serious charges including rioting, use of explosives, providing material support to terrorists, obstruction of justice, and attempted murder of a police officer.

Federal prosecutors identified the convicted defendants as Cameron Arnold (also known as Autunm Hill), Zachary Evetts, Benjamin Song, Savanna Batten, Bradford Morris (also known as Meagan Morris), Maricela Rueda, Elizabeth Soto, Ines Soto, and Daniel Rolando Sanchez-Estrada. Seven additional defendants had previously pleaded guilty to providing material support to terrorists in connection with the case.

According to prosecutors, the group formed part of what investigators described as a North Texas Antifa cell allegedly connected to a broader militant network advocating the overthrow of U.S. governmental authority and law enforcement institutions.

A Coordinated Assault on a Federal Facility

Trial evidence revealed that on the night of July 4, 2025, at least eleven individuals allegedly converged on the Prairieland detention center wearing “black bloc” clothing designed to conceal identities and hinder police identification.

Prosecutors said the group arrived armed with eleven firearms, body armor, and tactical medical kits capable of treating gunshot wounds. Evidence presented during the trial showed the attackers allegedly used fireworks and explosive devices to target facility property while vandalizing vehicles and security infrastructure.

When an Alvarado police officer responded to the emergency call, the situation escalated dramatically. Body-camera footage introduced in court captured defendant Benjamin Song shouting “get to the rifles” before allegedly opening fire on officers. The responding police officer was struck in the neck during the exchange of gunfire.

Correctional officers at the facility reportedly took cover while shots were fired. Most suspects were arrested shortly after the attack near the scene. Song allegedly evaded capture for several days before being arrested on July 15, 2025.

Prosecutors Describe Structured Planning

Federal investigators testified that the group allegedly spent months planning the attack. Evidence introduced in court showed that members of the cell collectively obtained more than 50 firearms in the Dallas–Fort Worth region prior to July 4.

Encrypted messaging applications with auto-delete features were reportedly used to coordinate planning discussions, reconnaissance of the facility, and logistical preparation for the attack. Some defendants also allegedly participated earlier in the day in a lawful protest outside the detention center, later reporting security observations back to members planning the nighttime assault.

Testimony from cooperating defendants described a “gear check” meeting the night before the attack where weapons, equipment, and tactics were allegedly discussed. According to witness testimony, the group’s alleged leader Benjamin Song suggested freeing detainees held inside the facility.

Federal Authorities Call Case Historic

Attorney General Pamela Bondi described the verdict as part of a broader federal effort to confront politically motivated violence. “Today’s verdict on terrorism charges will not be the last as the administration continues dismantling violent networks targeting American institutions,” Bondi said in a statement.

U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould for the Northern District of Texas emphasized that the attack crossed the line from protest into organized violence. “Their terrorist acts, attempted murder, vandalism, and explosives launched at a detention facility were a far cry from peaceful protest,” Raybould said.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the convictions demonstrate that federal authorities remain committed to identifying and dismantling extremist networks operating inside the United States.

“This case shows that violence against law enforcement will not be tolerated,” Patel said.

Legal Exposure and Sentencing Risks

The convictions carry potentially severe prison sentences.

Benjamin Song faces a mandatory minimum of 20 years in federal prison and could receive a life sentence if the court imposes the maximum penalties tied to the attempted murder and firearms charges. Seven other defendants face minimum sentences of 10 years and maximum sentences of up to 60 years.

Daniel Rolando Sanchez-Estrada faces up to 40 years in prison on obstruction-related charges. The seven defendants who previously pleaded guilty to providing material support to terrorists face sentences of up to 15 years. Sentencing hearings for all sixteen defendants are scheduled before U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman.

What Comes Next

Federal investigators say the case may represent only the beginning of broader efforts to examine militant networks and financial support systems connected to extremist activity. Authorities have indicated that further investigations into potential funding sources and associated organizations remain ongoing.

For now, the Prairieland case stands as one of the most significant federal prosecutions involving alleged organized political violence in recent years. Additional legal developments, including sentencing outcomes and potential appeals, are expected later this year.

This investigation is ongoing.
