Nancy Lieberman is leading the charge of a louder “Free Brittney” campaign. Brittney Griner has been detained in Russia for over 2 months.  A Moscow court has extended the arrest of the WNBA star and Houston native until May 19, according to the Russian state news sources.   Lieberman, also known as "Lady Magic", former player and coach in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) and head coach of Power, a team in the BIG3 is considered one of the most successful figures in women's basketball. And Griner is not only a good friend, but a basketball legend, as well. The parents of former U.S. Marine Trevor Reed got their son back in a dramatic prisoner exchange on Wednesday. Meanwhile friends and family of WNBA superstar Brittney Griner are starting to demand her release.  Griner was arrested at the Moscow airport in February. Russian authorities are claiming her luggage contained traces of cannabis oil in vape cartridges. And the threat of 10 years in prison is being bandied around. Brittney was quietly arrested two weeks before Putin invaded Ukraine. And the Russian media made it a big story during the height of the invasion. A video with voice overs was playing during her mysterious arrest.

Both Griner and Lieberman are from Texas. And Lieberman says Griner is not only a good friend, but a basketball legend, as well. “As an athlete, and a mom,” she is asking that the chorus to release Brittney Griner from Russian custody get a whole lot louder. "Thank you for doing this and thank you for being loud on behalf of Brittney. We need this," Lieberman told WFAA. "If it was Lebron James, if it was Steph Curry, if it was Tiger Woods, would we be reading about this every single day? There would be a movement to get our guys back in America. I don't know. Where is the movement for Brittney?" "It's just a horrible, horrible situation." Some politicians like Congressman Colin Allred, also a Baylor alum, and Hillary Clinton have spoken out on Griner's behalf. But the WNBA has had a muted reaction, so far. And the Biden administration is telling everyone to be cautious.  Basketball legend Lisa Leslie, who played for the Los Angeles Sparks from 1997 to 2009, said the Basketball community is more and more concerned. And they had been cautioned not to make a “big fuss” about the arrest.  Lieberman believes that more people should be asking for her release. And the time to sit down and be quiet is long past. And Free Brittney is starting to echo.
