Tech giants cut 142,000 jobs to fund AI boom

American technology companies eliminated more than 142,000 jobs during the first five months of 2026, marking a staggering 33% increase compared to the same period last year. This aggressive downsizing wave comes despite participating employers posting record-breaking corporate revenues. Instead of navigating financial distress, industry leaders are intentionally redirecting billions of dollars away from human payroll to fund a massive, unprecedented $700 billion artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout.

Silicon Valley pivots from payroll to processing power

The current consolidation wave represents a fundamental shift in how the tech industry allocates capital. Data from workforce analytics firm TrueUp and outplacement agency Challenger, Gray & Christmas indicates that the industry is on pace to shed up to 370,000 workers by the end of the year. If realized, this total will approach the post-pandemic record of 430,000 layoffs recorded in 2023.

Unlike previous downturns where companies cut costs to survive, the 2026 workforce reductions are occurring alongside record-breaking quarterly earnings. The industry’s most prominent players are aggressively scaling up their capital expenditure targets, signaling to Wall Street that purchasing massive compute power has taken priority over maintaining human staff.

The strategy materialized clearly on May 20, when Meta began issuing termination notices to approximately 8,000 employees, representing 10% of its workforce. On that exact day, financial software giant Intuit announced 3,000 job cuts of its own, slashing its global headcount by 17%.

Hyperscalers commit $700 billion to artificial intelligence

The financial math behind these corporate decisions reveals an industry-wide re-allocation of funds. Four dominant "hyperscalers"—Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta—collectively committed to an estimated $700 billion in capital expenditure for the calendar year, effectively doubling their combined infrastructure investments from 2025.

• Amazon: Leading the capital surge with a projected $200 billion infrastructure commitment.

• Microsoft: Allocating approximately $190 billion toward expanded AI compute capacity.

• Alphabet: Boosting capital expenditure guidance to a range between $175 billion and $190 billion following a sequential doubling of its Google Cloud backlog to $462 billion.

• Meta: Projecting up to $145 billion in hardware investments, driven by rising data center costs.

A clear window into this industrial logic emerged via an internal Meta memo obtained by reporters, which explicitly stated that the May headcount reductions were executed to offset the substantial financial investments required for high-end technology. Meta Chief Financial Officer Susan Li reinforced this stance during an earnings call, warning analysts that the enterprise could risk underestimating its long-term compute needs as advancements accelerate. Meta's first-quarter revenue climbed 33% year-over-year to $56.3 billion, yielding a net income of $26.8 billion—rendering its annual AI infrastructure budget roughly four to five times larger than its entire human compensation bill.

Other tech executives have echoed this strategy. Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins publicly described his company's termination of roughly 4,000 workers as a necessary prerequisite for funding advanced silicon, optics, and specialized security tools. Meanwhile, Oracle executed the single largest workforce reduction event of the year, cutting approximately 30,000 positions to accelerate its ongoing transition toward cloud data centers.
