The pressure is increasing for a President Biden drop out of the presidential race. A New York Times report indicating he may have privately acknowledged this possibility to a “key ally” was published. And concerns about his candidacy continue to grow within his own party.

 Biden is fighting to prove he is still the right person for the job after a disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump last week.

Ever since Democrats watched their presidential nominee implode in real time on stage there have been whispers about replacing Biden on the ticket.

Biden told campaign staffers, "I’m in this race to the end, and we are going to win." However, the next few days will be crucial in determining his hold on the nomination as party anxiety continues to grow.

Biden Decline

Some of Biden's aides and allies have reported to CNN they've witnessed "15, 20 occasions" where the president appeared disoriented. And his debate performance was "not a one-off." 

Axios claims that aides allege Biden is "dependably engaged" from only 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. With the New York Times confirming that debate prep at Camp David "never started before 11 a.m." and that Biden took "an afternoon nap" each day.

An ally of Biden emphasized the stakes, stating that more poor performances could send the campaign into an even steeper downward spiral.

White House spokesperson Andrew Bates is calling the Times report "absolutely false." In the midst of public denials this conversation marks the first indication of a potential Biden drop out. 

Although the White House denied these claims, the rumors have sparked further speculation among Biden’s allies.

On Capitol Hill, Democratic House members are circulating a draft letter urging Biden to step aside for the party’s sake. Meanwhile, another group of lawmakers is drafting their own letter, expressing concerns that Biden's nomination could harm their chances in swing districts.

Polls Plummet as Doubts Grow

Concerns about Biden's viability as a candidate have led to increased anxiety within the Democratic Party. Top Democrats are urging Biden’s aides to take the recent developments seriously.

A CBS News poll showed former President Donald Trump slightly ahead of Biden nationally and in virtually all the battleground states. Biden’s campaign team is closely monitoring these polls, aware that unfavorable numbers could make matters worse.

A NYT/Siena College poll indicated a significant shift, with Trump leading Biden by six percentage points and a substantial portion of likely voters viewing Biden as too old and diminished for the job.

 The electoral map appears to be shifting, with traditionally blue states like New Mexico, Minnesota, Virginia, and New Hampshire becoming competitive.

In response to the rising doubts, Biden has been reaching out to Democratic officials and key allies. He has a scheduled meeting with Democratic governors at the White House.

Sources say that his strategy to move past the debate performance and refocus on Trump might not succeed.

The speculation about Biden's future is dominating discussions in Washington. Reports from The New York Times and CNN suggested Biden might need to prove that he is still up for the job in the coming days.

Intensifying Campaign Efforts

Amid calls for him to step aside, Biden has ramped up his campaign activities. He has conducted interviews with Black radio hosts and engaged directly with Democratic leaders like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. 

Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have made efforts to show a united front, with both participating in campaign calls and public appearances.

Vice President Kamala Harris has remained supportive of Biden, defending him publicly and privately. 

Despite some discussions about her potentially taking over the nomination, Harris has continued to work closely with Biden. She is attending briefings and meetings with him.

 A person close to the campaign emphasized that Harris would be the logical alternative if Biden were to step down, given her position as the current Vice President and her demographics. And she would also have immediate and unhampered access to the millions already raised for the ticket.

Biden Drop Out Possible

The president understands the importance of the coming days, with several key appearances scheduled, including an interview with George Stephanopoulos of ABC News and campaign stops in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. 

In response to these challenges, Biden’s campaign has announced upcoming stops in crucial states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Biden is also set to meet with Democratic governors, some of whom have been mentioned as potential replacements for him.

Despite the efforts to stabilize the campaign, the party remains anxious. Even routine administrative tasks and campaign job postings are being scrutinized for signs of the campaign’s direction.

The situation remains fluid, with Biden’s team planning to re-nominate him before the Democratic convention in August. 

However, the pressure from party members and the shifting political landscape continue to pose significant challenges for Biden’s campaign.
