Reports suggest that the facility has been grappling with security lapses and staffing shortages, contributing to an environment where incidents like this can occur. The attacker's identity remains undisclosed, and the motive behind the assault is yet to be determined. Derek Chauvin, aged 47, had been transferred to FCI Tucson from a maximum-security Minnesota state prison in August 2022. This move was part of his concurrent sentences – a 21-year federal term for violating George Floyd’s civil rights and a 22½-year state sentence for second-degree murder. Chauvin's lawyer, Eric Nelson, had advocated for keeping him out of the general population, citing concerns for his safety. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the former policeman’s appeal of the murder conviction. His attorneys are trying to overturn his federal guilty plea based on new evidence he claims exonerates him from causing Floyd's death. The tragic death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, triggered global protests against police brutality and racism after Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on Floyd's neck for 9½ minutes. Floyd's dying cries of "I can't breathe" were captured in a bystander video, leading to a national reckoning on these critical issues. The Bureau of Prisons acknowledged the assault, claiming that responding staff promptly contained the situation and administered life-saving measures before transporting the injured inmate to a hospital for further evaluation.Investigations ongoing
The FBI has been notified, and an investigation is underway. Currently, no visitors are allowed at the facility until the inquiry is complete.
