In an unprecedented ruling, a Russian court has levied a fine of $2 decillion dollars against Google for its failure to comply with content regulations. This is the equivalent of a 34-figure sum.

This was initially imposed in March as a penalty for Google’s restriction of certain YouTube content, the massive fine continues to grow daily. 

The Menlo Park, California-based tech giant’s debt has reached this astronomical figure due to accumulated penalties stemming from an ongoing conflict over banned Russian channels.

Google’s Fine of $2 Decillion Dollars 

The fine structure was first set in 2020, when a Russian court ruled that Google would be fined 100,000 rubles ($1,030) for each day it did not reinstate certain YouTube channels. 

This daily fine doubles weekly, compounding to the figure Google now faces. 

Attorney Ivan Morozov explained to Russian state news agency Tass, "Google was called by a Russian court to administrative liability under Art. 13.41 of the Administrative Offenses Code for removing channels on the YouTube platform… the court ordered the company to restore these channels."

An Unbelievable Fine

The Russian state news agency Tass reported that Google’s $2 decillion debt is equivalent to 312.5 quintillion times Russia’s entire GDP of $8 trillion for 2023.

 By comparison, the world’s combined economy is estimated to be $110 trillion, making Google’s fine a sum beyond comprehension in real-world terms. 

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked on the fine, calling it symbolic, and suggested, "Probably, this… should be a reason for Google's management to take notice and rectify the situation."

A Growing Rift: Russia and Google

The ongoing legal battle traces back to 2022, when Google halted advertisements to Russian users and stopped monetizing content supporting Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.

 Since then, the company has blocked over 1,000 YouTube channels, including those associated with Russian state-sponsored news. It also removed more than 5.5 million videos. 

On Thursday, the Kremlin reiterated its demand that Google lift restrictions on certain Russian TV channels, with the court ruling stating that Google can only resume operations in Russia after compliance.

While Google’s Russian subsidiary declared bankruptcy in 2022, the tech giant has continued some limited operations within Russia. 

However, its advertising service, Google AdSense, shut down in Russia on August 12, effectively ending monetization for Russian content creators.
