Economists warn of corporate 'AI washing'

Goldman Sachs estimates that AI-related payroll reductions across major American employers are currently averaging more than 16,000 terminated positions per month. However, prominent labor experts question whether artificial intelligence is genuinely ready to absorb these job functions, or if the technology is merely serving as a convenient corporate shield for traditional cost-cutting.

An independent analysis by Oxford Economics concluded that firms do not appear to be replacing staff with automated tools on a significant scale yet. This suggests an ongoing corporate trend of using technology trends as justification for routine budget trimming. Even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the phenomenon, confirming that while real worker displacement is occurring, a notable amount of "AI washing" is taking place where executives blame automation for layoffs they would have executed regardless. Deutsche Bank analysts previously warned investors that this type of redundancy washing would become a defining corporate feature throughout the year.

Junior developers face the steepest employment drop

While the long-term impact on the broader American labor market remains an open question, the negative consequences are highly concentrated among younger tech professionals. The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI published its authoritative 2026 AI Index, revealing that employment for software developers between the ages of 22 and 25 plummeted nearly 20% since 2024.

Conversely, tech workers aged 30 and older saw overall headcount growth during that identical timeframe. The data shows that generative tools are not eliminating software engineering as an entire discipline; instead, automation is successfully absorbing the exact entry-level tasks traditionally assigned to junior staff, including:

4. Handling minor backend operations

This shift has created a stark structural divide within the technology workforce. While traditional engineering, recruiting, and product management roles face steep contractions, specialized openings in machine learning infrastructure, model evaluation, and AI safety face acute talent shortages.

Government officials scramble to address worker displacement

The rapid escalation of tech layoffs has triggered a wave of regulatory concern, though concrete worker protections remain stalled. On May 21, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a first-of-its-kind executive order directing the state's Labor and Workforce Development Agency to evaluate severance standards and explore policy updates to support workers displaced by automated systems.

The order gives state agencies 180 days to deliver formal policy recommendations. However, labor leaders argue that government intervention is moving too slowly to protect vulnerable tech workers. California Labor Federation President Lorena Gonzalez criticized the current landscape, stating publicly that catastrophic job loss from AI is a political choice rather than an inevitability.

Currently, no federal law requires American corporations to disclose whether automated technology directly motivated a mass layoff. While Colorado's AI Act introduces some oversight regarding algorithmic discrimination in hiring, federal initiatives like the No Robot Bosses Act—which seeks to mandate human oversight for major employment decisions—remain stuck in congressional committees.

As tech conglomerates continue to funnels hundreds of billions into high-bandwidth memory and physical data center real estate, the financial pressure to reduce human overhead is expected to intensify. Whether these massive hardware investments will generate the long-term financial returns required to satisfy Wall Street investors remains the central, unanswered question hanging over the industry.
