Hundreds Of Thousands March In May Day “Workers Over Billionaires” Boycott — Schools Shut Across Five States As NEA Leads Largest Labor Mobilization In A Decade

In New York City, demonstrators converged on Foley Square before snaking past Trump Tower. In Los Angeles, the procession moved from MacArthur Park to City Hall under heavy LAPD escort. In Atlanta, several hundred Delta Air Lines mechanics joined the column outside the state capitol. Smaller but vocal crowds gathered in Boise, Bismarck and Birmingham — cities where May Day actions have historically struggled to draw triple-digit turnout.
Even abroad, U.S. citizens marched in solidarity. The U.S. Consulate General in Florence, Italy issued a demonstration alert noting that several hundred protesters were expected outside the building between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. local time. Similar gatherings unfolded outside U.S. embassies in London, Berlin, Mexico City and Seoul.
White House Pushes Back
The Trump administration moved quickly to dismiss the demonstrations as a coordinated political stunt by what press secretary Karoline Leavitt called "the same far-left machine that has lost every major election since 2024." Leavitt told reporters at the daily briefing that the president "respects the right to peaceful assembly" but argued that the underlying economic message ignored what she described as record private-sector job creation in the first quarter of 2026.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune issued a written statement saying the protesters "have every right to march, but they do not have the right to shut down classrooms and inconvenience working families who are simply trying to drop their kids off at school." House Speaker Mike Johnson echoed that line, accusing the NEA of "weaponizing children" to score political points.
Democrats lined up on the other side of the divide. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer joined the Manhattan march briefly, telling a reporter it was the largest crowd he had seen on a New York sidewalk since the Women's March of 2017. Sen. Bernie Sanders headlined a rally outside the U.S. Capitol where he called for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United, the 2010 Supreme Court ruling that opened the door to unlimited corporate political spending.
Echoes of the "No Kings" Movement
Friday's protests are widely viewed as the next phase of the "No Kings" demonstrations that erupted last year in opposition to expansive executive orders, mass federal layoffs and the use of active-duty military forces in immigration enforcement. Many of the same legal observer networks, mutual-aid groups and faith coalitions that organized the No Kings marches turned out for May Day, and several speakers explicitly tied the two movements together.
